Key on the Table

Vernon Mercer · 4:35

The truck is running fine. The wrench is already clean. He stays at work anyway. “Key on the Table” is an original slow Chicago blues song about a night-shift mechanic, a partner tired of eating alone, and the conversations he keeps putting off. He knows how to keep an engine running. When he finally picks up the phone, “It’s me, baby” is all he can say. Rooted in 1950s electric Chicago blues, the song moves through a patient 72 BPM shuffle in E. A low, intimate baritone sits just behind the beat, surrounded by warm tube-amp guitar, amplified harmonica, sparse piano, upright bass, and softly played drums. Short instrumental answers and a twelve-bar harmonica solo leave room for the loneliness to settle.
